Benidorm turns 700, Celebrates with book bench and packed schedule

Benidorm, Costa Blanca – The city of Benidorm is marking a significant milestone this year, celebrating its 700th anniversary with a series of engaging activities. Among the most striking initiatives is a unique bench crafted from over 700 books. This distinctive piece of urban art is prominently located on a major city artery, Avenida de l’Aigüera.

The city's origins trace back to May 8, 1325, when Admiral Bernat de Sarrià signed an official document granting permission to establish a new town at the current site of Benidorm. The primary goal was to encourage settlement and defend against potential adversaries, such as pirates. Thus, Benidorm began its life as a humble fishing village.

Over the centuries, Benidorm underwent a dramatic transformation. Initially, the economy was based primarily on fishing and agriculture. However, the 1950s and 60s ushered in a period of radical change. The then-mayor, Pedro Zaragoza Orts, spearheaded a visionary plan to transform Benidorm into a premier tourist destination. His efforts were remarkably successful. The city saw the rise of tall buildings, modern infrastructure, and a proliferation of hotels. Tourists across Spain and other countries flocked to Benidorm, drawn by its favorable climate, beautiful beaches, and vibrant nightlife. This era solidified Benidorm's reputation as one of the most famous locations on the Spanish coast.

To commemorate its 700 years of history, the city now proudly features the special 'bank of books.' The bench displays the spines of numerous books, referencing famous works and authors, particularly those from the Valencia region. This artistic installation serves as a reminder of the importance of reading, learning, and culture to the city's identity.

The 700th anniversary year is being celebrated in numerous other ways as well. The celebration includes historical exhibitions detailing the city's past, guided walking tours exploring ancient buildings, and lectures focusing on the medieval period. Local schools are also actively participating, with students learning about Benidorm's history and engaging in creative projects.

The festivities will also feature performances, book markets, and a grand parade through the streets planned for later in the year. The year-long celebration is set to conclude with a special closing event.
